Nigeria’s 53-year-old National Youth Service Corps is getting its biggest shake-up yet. The Federal Executive Council on Monday approved sweeping reforms that strip military officers of operational leadership, handing control to civilian management instead.
A redesigned uniform is part of the package. So is a tech-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment, and a revamped six-week orientation camp built around leadership, entrepreneurship, and digital skills. Skills-based primary assignments will also replace the old posting model.
The traditional Passing Out Parade is out, a graduation ceremony takes its place. The PUNCH reports that the government will amend the NYSC Act to give the reforms legal backing, firmly aligning the scheme with Nigeria’s broader economic agenda.
