Ambassador-designates Fani-Kayode and Omokri have publicly declared that power cannot return to Northern Nigeria in 2027, insisting the South must be allowed to complete two full terms until 2031
ABUJA — Two of President Bola Tinubu’s ambassador-designates, Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri, have strongly opposed any move to return power to Northern Nigeria after the 2027 elections.
In a joint statement on Saturday, both officials argued that the North enjoyed two full uninterrupted terms under former President Muhammadu Buhari, backed by Southern support, and therefore cannot reclaim the presidency after just one Southern term.
“We view it as unpatriotic and inimical to the unity, equilibrium, and progress of Nigeria for anyone to even conceive of power returning to Northern Nigeria after only one term of four years,” the statement read.
Both diplomats invoked the gentleman’s agreement on power rotation established at the dawn of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999, insisting Tinubu deserves a second term.
They described the South’s current hold on power as “not incidental but deliberate,” calling for balanced and orderly rotation between the nation’s regions.
