The Christian Association of Nigeria’s South-West zone has opposed a provision in the FRSC Amendment Bill, 2026 that seeks to ban preaching inside commercial vehicles.
CAN KICKS AGAINST PROPOSED BAN ON PREACHING IN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
According to The PUNCH, CAN said the provision could infringe on citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of religion, expression and conscience if signed into law. The Senate recently passed the bill, which proposes a ₦50,000 fine for hawking, trading or preaching inside commercial vehicles.
The bill also prescribes a ₦50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both, for motorists who refuse roadside breath tests by FRSC officials. In a statement signed by South-West Chairman Bishop Barnabas Akinsanya, CAN appealed to President Bola Tinubu to withhold assent to the bill.
CAN encouraged wider consultations with religious bodies, legal experts, transport unions and civil society groups. The group said it supports efforts to improve road safety but wants lawmakers to ensure any legislation balances public safety with constitutional freedoms.
