At least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police officers were reportedly killed on Friday after Boko Haram insurgents launched simultaneous midnight attacks on two military formations in Gujba Local Government Area, the hometown of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni.
In a devastating escalation of violence in the North-East, at least 36 soldiers and Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers were killed early Friday during coordinated Boko Haram attacks in Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State. According to reports exclusively gathered by SaharaReporters, the insurgents launched simultaneous assaults around 1:00 a.m. on the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari. Troops were reportedly forced into a fierce, multi-hour gun battle as the insurgents attempted to overwhelm the camps, which are located in the hometown of Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Surviving personnel described a chaotic scene where they were unable to provide reinforcements to neighboring units due to being pinned down by gunfire within their own perimeters. One soldier involved in the combat at the 27 Task Force Brigade confirmed the death of three colleagues at his location but noted that the toll at the nearby training center was far more severe. “My camp was attacked by Boko Haram. In 27TF BDE Buni Gari, three soldiers were killed in action and the attack started by 1:00a.m. The Boko Haram were attacking us and at the same time attacking our neighbouring camp,” the soldier stated, adding that the Buniyadi site was specifically used for training security personnel newly deployed to the region.
Internal military communications reveal that the Buniyadi training center suffered the bulk of the casualties, with 33 personnel lost in the line of duty. This figure reportedly includes 17 Mobile Police officers and 10 soldiers who were at the facility for training, as well as six soldiers permanently stationed at the camp. “Information sharing on the platform shows that the training centre has more casualties. Thirty-three people were killed: 17 mobile police officers that came for training were killed in action, 10 soldiers that came for training were killed in action, while six soldiers permanently deployed there were also killed in action. Yesterday was bloody, bro,” a source confirmed. The attacks have cast fresh doubt on government claims regarding the degradation of the insurgent group.
