The Senate has warned it will invoke constitutional sanctions against the CBN, NDDC and NUPRC after the agencies skipped a public hearing on NEITI’s 2021–2023 oil and gas audit reports.
The Senate has threatened to invoke constitutional sanctions against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) after the agencies failed to appear before a public hearing on the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) audit reports covering 2021 to 2023. According to The Nation, the absence stalled the Senate Public Accounts Committee’s investigation into alleged discrepancies in the reports.
Committee Chairman Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo described the no-show as a disregard for the Senate’s oversight powers. Lawmakers ordered the agencies to appear on August 6, warning that further non-compliance could trigger sanctions under the Constitution and Senate Standing Orders.
The committee said its investigation into the NEITI audit findings will continue as scheduled, with other agencies expected to appear in subsequent sessions.
