Nigeria loses 420,000 tonnes of fish yearly to post-harvest waste — Oyetola

Nigeria loses an estimated 420,000 tonnes of fish yearly to post-harvest waste, deepening supply deficits and food insecurity, the federal government has warned.

The Federal Government says Nigeria loses about 420,000 tonnes of fish annually to post-harvest waste, worsening supply gaps and food insecurity. Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola disclosed this while defending his ministry’s ₦10.49bn 2026 budget before National Assembly committees.

Oyetola said post-harvest losses of up to 30 per cent undermine affordability despite fish being a cheap protein source. “Despite fish being one of the cheapest and most accessible sources of animal protein for Nigerian families, post-harvest losses of up to 30 per cent continue to undermine supply and affordability,” he said.
