NUT warns: Teachers might stop teaching if insecurity persists

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Titus Amba, has warned that teachers across the country may withdraw their services if insecurity in schools continues unchecked. His statement comes amid rising abductions and attacks on schools in northern states, including Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara, forcing several boarding schools in vulnerable areas to close.

Amba described the surge in attacks as a direct assault on education and the safety of teachers and students. “In Kebbi, a vice principal was killed right in the line of duty. In Niger and Kwara States, hundreds of students were kidnapped, and in many parts of the country, teachers have been abducted while trying to teach our children,” he said. He urged the government to treat school security as a national emergency.

The NUT president called for reinforced security measures, including deploying personnel and using technology to monitor threats. “We expect concrete action, not just promises. Secure the schools, protect the teachers and learners, and we will gladly continue our work in the classrooms,” he said. Meanwhile, the NUT Jigawa State chapter elected and sworn in new executives, with Chairman Shu’aibu Guri pledging to prioritize teachers’ welfare and rights.
