Nigeria’s Senate approves electronic transmission of election results to IReV while maintaining manual collation as a contingency.
The Senate on Tuesday approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s result viewing portal (IReV), while retaining manual collation as a backup in case of technical failures. The amendment followed scrutiny of clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2026, introduced by Tahir Monguno, who said adjustments were needed “to prevent disputes and operational setbacks during elections.”
Under the approved provision, presiding officers may transmit results electronically after completing, signing, and stamping form EC8A. However, electronic transmission is not mandatory, and manual EC8A forms will serve as the official basis for collation where technology fails. The motion, seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, passed by voice vote, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio declaring the “ayes” victorious.
