The Nigeria Police Force has warned it will not recruit repentant terrorists or known criminals, while also announcing joint border patrols across Kwara’s corridors to curb cross-border crime.
The police force is drawing a hard line on who gets to wear the uniform. Deputy Inspector General of Police Isyaku Mohammed says repentant terrorists and known criminals have no place in its ranks, Channels Television reports.
Mohammed gave the warning at a stakeholders’ meeting with officers, traditional rulers, religious leaders and transport unions in Ilorin, Kwara State. He urged community heads, DPOs and religious leaders to stop signing recommendation letters for anyone with a criminal past, no matter how genuine their claimed reform.
The police, he said, will guard its recruitment system against infiltration by ex-criminals, and communities must help identify and expose such persons. Mohammed also announced joint border patrols across Kwara’s corridors with Ekiti, Oyo, Kogi, Niger and Benin Republic to tackle cross-border crime.
