Burkina Faso has officially cut diplomatic ties with France, accusing Paris of backing terrorist networks, a claim France has rejected as “hostile and unfounded.”
Burkina Faso just slammed the door on France — for good, it seems. The military government announced Friday that it has severed diplomatic ties with its former colonial ruler, accusing France of backing terrorist groups and meddling in the country’s internal affairs, TheCable reports.
The junta said the break takes immediate effect after a review of bilateral relations, insisting the trust and mutual respect needed for ties no longer exist. Communications Minister Pingdwende Ouedraogo accused France of supporting “subversive networks and terrorists,” though he offered no evidence.
France pushed back hard, calling the move “hostile and unfounded” and saying it’s reviewing reciprocal measures. Relations have soured steadily since Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power in 2022, expelling French troops and diplomats soon after.
