Senior lawyer Olisa Agbakoba has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s initiative to establish state police forces. However, he cautioned against replicating the failures of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and granting governors unchecked authority over these forces.
Agbakoba expressed concern that state police might suffer the same fate as SIECs and local governments, which were intended for good but became ineffective due to executive capture. He emphasized the need for institutional protection to ensure reforms serve the public rather than executive power.
