Presidential aide Tope Fasua faced online mockery after claiming phone snatching is not a “major crisis” in Nigeria compared to foreign nations.
The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, has sparked public outcry after dismissing phone snatching as a minor issue in Nigeria. Speaking at a Kay Hikers Club event, Fasua compared Nigeria’s security favorably to the UK and Cameroon.
The remarks followed a confrontation with an attendee who linked economic hardship to rampant street crime. She stated, “Nigerians are no numbers. We are real people going through real hell.” Fasua downplayed these concerns, citing London and Cameroon as worse examples: “In Cameroon, you can’t hold your phone like this.”
He added, “Nigerians have moved ahead… It is not a major crisis.” Attendees rejected his call for a “mindset shift,” arguing the government is “spiritualizing” structural failures. Fasua concluded that individuals must find ways to survive regardless of state performance.
