The NCDC has activated an emergency alert across Lagos, the FCT, and eight other high-risk Nigerian states following an outbreak of the vaccine-resistant Bundibugyo Ebola strain in East and Central Africa.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and eight other states on a high public health alert. The directive follows an outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain in East and Central Africa, which has already caused 1,077 suspected cases and 247 deaths across Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The NCDC identified high-risk zones, including Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, and Adamawa, due to major international travel and border routes. Unlike the common Zaire strain, this variant has no approved vaccine.
Warning frontline medical personnel against delaying triage protocols, the agency stated: “Health workers must not wait for bleeding before suspecting Ebola in any patient with compatible symptoms and relevant travel or exposure history.”
