The NCC has launched a stakeholder-driven review of Nigeria’s 26-year-old telecom policy to reflect modern digital, broadband and satellite communication realities.
The Nigerian Communications Commission has commenced a review of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000, nearly three decades after its approval, citing rapid technological change. The NCC announced the review on Monday with a consultation paper, saying the move aims to align the policy with digital services, broadband expansion and internet governance.
The Commission noted that the existing framework has been overtaken by developments in digital platforms and satellite networks, stating, “Prior to the liberalisation… Nigeria’s telecommunications sector was dominated by the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL).” It added that the review will address issues including right-of-way costs, funding and protection of critical telecom infrastructure.
