Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, citing severe marginalization, intimidation of her supporters, and a flawed consensus process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as the party’s 2027 governorship candidate.
Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has officially dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State. The US-based epidemiologist and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo threw in the towel via a blistering May 31 resignation letter sent to state party chairman Yemi Sanusi, citing sustained marginalization, rejection, and outright disrespect by the state’s party leadership.
According to Daily Post, the major catalyst for her exit was the highly controversial consensus process that crowned Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the APC’s governorship candidate for the upcoming election. Obasanjo revealed that the entire arrangement completely violated the ruling party’s established guidelines.
Even though she was willing to play ball for party harmony, the former lawmaker was completely iced out of the decision-making loop. “I committed myself to supporting any candidate that emerged through a consensus arrangement, but I was not consulted before Senator Adeola was announced. Some of my supporters were denied entry to the venue and intimidated. Nevertheless, I accepted the decision in the interest of unity and publicly congratulated him that same night,” she stated.
The final straw came after Senator Adeola blanked her team following a post-primary reconciliation meeting. Despite promising to address three critical demands raised by her loyalists within a week, the candidate went completely radio silent for over two months. Obasanjo noted that this cold treatment perfectly mirrored a recurring pattern of disregard for her political structure, leaving her with no choice but to walk away from the broom party.
