A more stable Naira is easing fiscal pressure and boosting confidence, but Nigeria’s deeper economic challenges remain unresolved.
Nigeria’s currency has entered a period of relative calm, with the Naira stabilising between N1,350 and N1,430 to the dollar after earlier volatility. Analysts attribute this shift partly to reforms and the impact of the Dangote Refinery, which has reduced foreign exchange demand for fuel imports, easing pressure on reserves and supporting fiscal stability.
The benefits are already visible. Lower volatility has made debt servicing more predictable and reduced exchange-rate risks. As noted, “Every 100 Naira depreciation against the dollar adds billions of Naira to the annual debt service bill.” Stability has also improved investor confidence and supported trade performance.
However, challenges remain significant. Large deficits, heavy borrowing, and weak revenue persist despite these gains.
