Datti Baba-Ahmed: Obi, Atiku are seeking office, not leading opposition

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has stirred fresh political debate after describing Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar as “office seekers” rather than genuine opposition leaders.

According to a report by Vanguard published on June 6, Baba-Ahmed argued that true opposition leadership goes beyond contesting elections and requires consistent engagement with citizens and a clear alternative vision for governance.

The outspoken politician said many opposition figures have focused more on winning power than building a strong movement capable of holding the government accountable. He specifically mentioned Obi and Atiku while discussing the state of Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

His comments come as opposition parties continue realignments and consultations ahead of the next presidential race, with both Obi and Atiku already positioning themselves for major roles in the contest.
