Concerns grow as activist disappears after soldier welfare video

Family and associates of Abuja-based social critic Justice Mark Chidiebere, known as Justice Crack, have raised an alarm over his disappearance following his viral criticism of the Nigerian Army’s welfare and feeding of soldiers.

An Abuja-based social critic and activist, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” has been declared missing amid allegations of a secret detention by security operatives. Chidiebere was last seen on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, after leaving his residence for a meeting following a mysterious phone call. His disappearance comes shortly after he published a video on social media sharply criticizing the Nigerian Army over the alleged poor welfare and feeding conditions of frontline soldiers. As of May 1, no security agency has publicly confirmed his arrest, leaving his family and associates in a state of mounting uncertainty and fear.

The activist’s wife, Theresa Chidiebere, has voiced grave concerns over the circumstances of his departure, noting that his phone has been switched off since approximately 8:35 p.m. on the day he vanished. She revealed that her husband had even arranged for a friend to pick up their children from school, citing a prolonged engagement. “I tried calling him several times, but his line was unreachable. The last time his phone was active was around 8:35 p.m., and since then, it has been off. I have been living in fear and confusion,” she said. Theresa further alleged that intelligence available to the family suggests Chidiebere was taken to a military facility in the Asokoro district of the Federal Capital Territory.

The situation has sparked a wave of condemnation from rights groups who fear the critic may be undergoing extrajudicial interrogation. Theresa alleged that the reports she received regarding his treatment were harrowing, suggesting he was being subjected to physical duress. “I was told he was taken to a military facility and treated in a way no human being deserves. If this is true, then something is terribly wrong. My husband is not a criminal,” she stated. While the Nigerian Army and the Police have yet to issue an official response to the missing person report, supporters of the activist continue to demand his immediate release or arraignment if any crime has been committed.
