‘Nigeria nearing anarchy’ — Northern elders demand national security emergency

The Northern Elders Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a national security emergency, warning that worsening insecurity is pushing Nigeria toward anarchy.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently declare a national security emergency, warning that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity is pushing the country toward a dangerous precipice.

According to Vanguard, the group made the demand in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Prof Abubakar Jiddere, on Wednesday.

The NEF said the security situation had deteriorated to an alarming level, stressing that urgent and drastic intervention was needed to prevent further descent into chaos.

“The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) expresses its deepest outrage and concern over the relentless collapse of security across the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No nation can claim progress when its citizens live in fear, its communities are under siege, and criminal elements operate with increasing boldness while millions of law-abiding citizens remain vulnerable,” the statement read.

Citing the Constitution, the group referenced Section 14(2)(b), which states that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

It questioned the rising wave of kidnappings, terrorism and banditry across the country, asking why citizens are increasingly left to fend for themselves.

The NEF noted that insecurity had spread across multiple regions, from Zamfara and Katsina to Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Borno, Oyo, Edo, Enugu and Imo States, among others.

It warned that continued attacks on communities, highways and farmlands were undermining national stability, economic growth and social cohesion.
