Primary election disputes tear NDC apart

jThe NDC is grappling with internal tensions over disputed primaries, delayed results, and accusations of manipulation across key regions.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing rising internal tensions following its nationwide primary elections held on May 29 ahead of the 2027 general elections, with disputes over candidate selection and delayed results fueling unrest within the party.

According to DAILY POST, although the party’s National Executive Committee had earlier announced the ratification of the primaries, official results are yet to be released, triggering speculation and mistrust among members.

The crisis is most pronounced in Kano State, where supporters of the ‘Kwankwasiya Movement’ and legacy NDC members are locked in disagreement over alleged dominance of the nomination process by allies of former governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The tension deepened after an unofficial list of candidates circulated online, prompting accusations of manipulation and attempts to control the party structure.

In the South-East, members of the ‘Obidient Movement’ also raised concerns, alleging unfair treatment of aspirants who claimed they were misled into paying millions of naira contrary to party directives.

Responding to the controversy, NDC spokesperson Osas Director said no official list of candidates had been released.

“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State or anywhere in the country,” Director said, adding that the party remained committed to transparent and democratic processes.

Reports also suggest that Kwankwaso has threatened to leave the party amid accusations of efforts to dominate its Kano structure, despite a reported 60–40 power-sharing arrangement brokered by Senator Seriake Dickson.
