The Nigerian community in Canada is grieving after two children died in separate accidental incidents across two provinces within seven days of each other.
Six-year-old Amna Ayomide Bennett died on April 26 after falling from a bedroom window of a 28th-floor apartment on Chalkfarm Drive, North York, Toronto. Toronto Police spokesperson Amy Davey confirmed the fall was from a “very high level,” adding: “It does not appear to be suspicious, but the investigation is ongoing.”
Twelve-year-old Damilola Khalid Afolabi drowned the following Sunday in Mahogany Lake, Calgary, barely a month after his family relocated from Ghana seeking a better life. His devastated father, Jubreel Afolabi, recalled his son’s final words before leaving home: “Daddy, thank you for the good life you are going to give us in Canada.”
Afolabi, who could not swim, jumped into the lake from its dock after returning from church and never resurfaced. Firefighters recovered his body, and he was buried in Calgary on Wednesday.
Authorities confirmed neither incident was treated as suspicious. The tragedies have sparked widespread condolences and safety warnings across Nigerian diaspora communities online.
