NANS Southwest has condemned renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa and announced plans to protest South African businesses in Nigeria.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has condemned the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, describing the killings of Nigerians as unacceptable and part of a troubling pattern of violence. In a statement issued by its coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, also known as BILLIONCODES, the student body expressed outrage over the deaths of two Nigerians, calling for urgent action to protect citizens abroad. “We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” he said.
The association announced plans to organise peaceful protests and advocacy campaigns targeting South African business interests operating in Nigeria. “This will include major corporations such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group. It is morally indefensible for businesses to thrive in an environment where the lives of Nigerians are protected, while Nigerians are subjected to fear and violence elsewhere. This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said.
NANS Southwest also urged the South African government to demonstrate a genuine commitment to safeguarding foreign nationals and ensuring justice for victims of the attacks. It warned that silence or delayed responses would be inadequate, stressing that the rights and dignity of Nigerians must be guaranteed. The group, however, said it remains open to dialogue with South African businesses, diplomatic channels and international stakeholders to address the crisis and prevent further violence.
