Nigeria has banned honorary degree holders from using the ‘Dr’ title, classifying misuse as academic fraud under a newly approved federal policy.
The Federal Government has prohibited recipients of honorary degrees from using the “Dr” prefix in official, academic, or professional contexts, declaring any such usage academic fraud carrying legal consequences.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa announced the Federal Executive Council-approved policy on Wednesday, describing it as a response to decades of indiscriminate degree conferrals driven by political patronage and financial gain. Under the new rules, recipients must cite full honorary designations after their names instead.
Universities without active PhD programmes are now barred from conferring honorary degrees entirely. The National Universities Commission will enforce compliance, and the government will publish annual lists of legitimate recipient.
