A TikTok content creator at the centre of the Oloolu Masquerade controversy has denied filming the sacred masquerade or dying, saying she only recorded an Amotekun vehicle and was wrongly accused.
The TikTok content creator at the centre of the controversy surrounding the annual Oloolu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, Oyo State, has denied reports that she filmed the revered Oloolu masquerade, insisting she neither recorded the sacred traditional figure nor died as widely rumoured on social media.
Speaking during a telephone interview on Ibi Aye N Lo, a programme on Lagelu FM hosted by Adesoye Omotosho on Monday, the woman, identified as Wasilat, said claims linking her to a recording of the Oloolu masquerade were false. According to the interview monitored by PUNCH Online, she maintained that she only recorded an Amotekun patrol vehicle while standing in front of her family’s shop along the Oremeji axis after noticing people gathering in the area.
Wasilat said the Oloolu masquerade did not pass through the route where she was standing. “I am not dead. I did not capture the Oloolu masquerade. May I not be implicated; I did not record Oloolu,” she said. Recounting the incident, she explained that she had gone to the shop without opening it and simply filmed what she saw before posting the clip on TikTok. According to her, users on the platform immediately urged her to delete the video, while unidentified persons later confronted her at the shop the following day.
She also questioned why eyewitnesses failed to defend her, saying she did not know who initiated the allegation against her. “I don’t know why the eyewitnesses on Thursday did not defend me. I don’t know who came up with that agenda, but I know God will judge,” she said.
The controversy generated widespread reactions after videos circulated online showing Wasilat undergoing traditional cleansing rites at the Oloolu compound. PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the content creator allegedly narrowly escaped death after she was accused of filming a procession linked to the annual Oloolu Masquerade Festival.
