Concerns over Nigeria’s approaching 2027 elections and delayed nominations may hinder acceptance of President Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees by host countries.
Several of President Bola Tinubu’s ambassadorial nominees risk rejection by host countries due to concerns over the short remaining tenure of the administration, officials have disclosed. With the 2027 elections approaching, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reportedly struggling to secure agrément for some nominees, as many countries prefer envoys with at least one to two years’ tenure.
A foreign service official said, “By the time they get the agrément, some of these ambassadors will have just a few months left.” Another source noted delays from screenings, background checks and mandatory retreats, adding that some nominees may not resume duties until August 2026, leaving limited time before the next election.
