The Senate on Thursday confirmed 64 career and non-career ambassadorial nominees after adopting a report by the Committee on Foreign Affairs. The confirmation followed the presentation of the committee’s findings, chaired by Sani Bello, which were subsequently approved by lawmakers during plenary.
During deliberations, Senator Sahabi Yau raised concerns over the absence of any nominee from Zamfara State, urging that the matter be brought to the attention of the President. Responding, the Senate President explained that the list before the chamber was not exhaustive and assured that additional nominations were expected.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier forwarded a request on December 4 seeking confirmation of 65 nominees, comprising 34 career ambassadors and 31 non-career ambassadors and high commissioners. The request was conveyed in a letter read on the Senate floor by the Senate President.
The list of non-career nominees includes prominent political figures such as former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, ex-Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and former presidential aide Reno Omokri, among others, drawing mixed reactions nationwide.
