FCCPC Threatens Sanctions Over Slow Petrol Price Cuts Despite Falling Crude
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has questioned the slow pace of petrol price reductions across Nigeria despite a sharp decline in global crude oil prices, warning that operators in the downstream sector could face regulatory scrutiny if evidence of consumer exploitation is established.
The Commission noted that marketers had been quick to raise prices when global crude costs spiked between April and May, pushing petrol from between ₦800 and ₦900 to as high as ₦1,500 per litre, while diesel hit ₦2,000 amid Gulf hostilities.
However, despite easing tensions in the Middle East and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, petrol still sells for an average of ₦1,200 nationwide, even as some local refiners have fixed gantry prices between ₦1,025 and ₦1,075.
FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, questioned why consumers were yet to benefit from falling global oil prices, vowing the Commission would not tolerate unfair pricing.
Katsina Govt Distances Itself From Reported Arrest Of Bandit Leaders At Airport
The Katsina State Government has said it cannot comment on the reported arrest of suspected bandit leaders at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, after they returned from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
Speaking in a weekend interview, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu Danmusa, said the matter falls entirely within the jurisdiction of federal security agencies, distancing the state government from the development.
Danmusa’s comments come amid public interest in how suspected bandit leaders may have travelled for the pilgrimage and the circumstances surrounding their alleged arrest upon return, with many awaiting an official position from federal authorities on the matter.
The state government’s reluctance to comment further underscores the sensitivity of security operations involving non-state actors and the overlapping responsibilities between state and federal agencies in tackling banditry in Nigeria’s North-West region.
Bandits Plant Fresh IED Along Sabon Birni–Kurawa Road, Residents Allege
Residents of Kurawa and neighbouring communities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State have alleged that suspected bandits planted another improvised explosive device (IED) along the Sabon Birni–Kurawa road, following fresh attacks on villages in the area.
According to the residents, the explosive was allegedly planted on Sunday to prevent security personnel stationed in Sabon Birni from responding to distress calls during raids on the affected communities.
The latest IED planting adds to a worrying pattern of attacks in the area, with residents expressing fears that such tactics are deliberately designed to cut off reinforcements and prolong bandit operations in the region.
Locals have called on security agencies to intensify patrols and clear suspected explosive devices along the route to ensure timely response to distress calls and protect lives and property in the embattled communities.

Navy Disrupts Illegal Oil Refining Operations In Rivers Forest
The Nigerian Navy has disrupted the movement of illegally refined petroleum products in Rivers State through an intelligence-led operation conducted under Operation DELTA SENTINEL.
The Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, said the operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH, who were deployed to the Orashi Forest area of Okolomade Community in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The operation forms part of the Navy’s sustained efforts to curb illegal bunkering and artisanal refining activities, which have continued to threaten the environment and deprive the Federal Government of substantial oil revenue in the Niger Delta region.
Naval authorities say such intelligence-led operations will continue across the creeks and forested areas of the Niger Delta to dismantle illegal refining networks and disrupt the supply chain that sustains the activities of oil thieves operating in the region.
National Assembly Set To Transmit State Police Bill To 36 Assemblies This Week
The National Assembly is set to transmit the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of state police to the 36 state Houses of Assembly this week, marking the next critical stage of one of Nigeria’s most far-reaching security reforms.
The development comes days after the Senate passed the landmark constitutional amendment, with lawmakers now racing to secure the approval of at least 24 state legislatures before the bill can be transmitted back for final presidential assent.
The proposed state police framework has been a long-standing demand from security experts and state governors who argue that a decentralised policing structure would improve response times and address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity more effectively than the current centralised system allows.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has expressed concerns about the current price of petrol at filling stations across Nigeria.

It noted that despite improved global conditions, petrol still sells at an average of ₦1,200 nationwide, with some local refiners fixing gantry prices between ₦1,025 and ₦1,075 despite de-escalating Middle East tensions.
FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, in a statement signed by Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, questioned why consumers were yet to benefit from the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the party’s national spokesman, Osa Director, the NDC approached INEC for the code required to complete the online submission but was told officials would “get back” to them, leaving the party unable to complete the mandatory upload before the court’s deregistration order.
He insisted the party’s inability to upload candidates should not be interpreted as its own failure, attributing the delay to INEC’s refusal to provide necessary credentials.
Director added that the NDC would make another request to INEC while pursuing legal steps to suspend enforcement of the court judgment.
