The United States has added 18 Nigerians to its deportation list, bringing the total number of Nigerians slated for removal to 97 under an expanded immigration enforcement operation.
The United States has listed an additional 18 Nigerians for deportation, raising the total number of Nigerians earmarked for removal to 97, according to a statement published on the website of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and seen on Tuesday.
The DHS said the arrests were part of a coordinated crackdown across multiple US states carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials. It described the effort as being conducted under its “worst-of-the-worst” criminal immigrants programme, targeting individuals allegedly convicted of serious offences.
US authorities claimed that the alleged crimes linked to the newly listed individuals include wire fraud, mail fraud and identity theft, offences it said pose significant financial and security risks. According to the DHS, the additional names were included as part of an expanded nationwide enforcement operation aimed at immigrants convicted of serious crimes.
