Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Tinubu in 2027, alleging that the ADC’s presidential primary was heavily rigged to favor Atiku Abubakar.
In a dramatic political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir Lawal announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, June 1, 2026. Speaking during a live interview on Channels Television’s evening program Politics Today, shortly after releasing a formal resignation notice on his official Facebook page, Lawal revealed his decision to withdraw from active partisan politics entirely. Expressing deep disillusionment with the contemporary operational landscape of Nigerian political systems, the elder statesman indicated that he intends to rechannel his immediate personal energies toward large-scale agriculture and localized church-related community activities.
The former SGF’s sudden exit was heavily triggered by deep-seated systemic grievances regarding the conduct of the ADC’s recently concluded presidential primary election, which saw former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerge as the party’s standard-bearer. Lawal, who was a key architect of the major opposition coalition that had newly adopted the ADC as its unified political vehicle, bitterly alleged that the entire internal electoral framework was compromised and written out behind closed doors by internal syndicates to Favor Atiku over other key contenders like Rotimi Amaechi. Reflecting on his decision to cut ties with the opposition platform rather than tolerate the compromise, Lawal stated, “I’ve just come to the conclusion that in Nigerian politics, everybody is… I don’t understand how it’s practised. I don’t know how it should be practised. Maybe there are some Nigerians who know to run their things. I don’t want to be part of anything again.”
Crucially, the prominent Northern politician issued a grim forecast for the opposition’s prospects in the 2027 race, confidently predicting a sweeping, unassailable landslide victory for the incumbent, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Lawal argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) maintains an unrivaled structural dominance in the art of political maneuvering, making it practically impossible for fractured opposition platforms to mount a successful challenge against the current presidency. Turning his criticisms sharply toward Atiku’s camp, the departing ADC chieftain maintained that he would similarly withhold any support from Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), concluding with a blunt assessment of the upcoming electoral dynamics: “Tinubu will win with landslide. If the parameter for winning the election in Nigeria is rigging, nobody can face Bola Tinubu. If Atiku’s strength is in manipulating results, he will meet the master leader in the front next year. And so they will be all the worse for it.”
