Washington moves to withhold half of Nigeria aid over insecurity concerns

The US plans to withhold half of its aid to Nigeria unless the country meets conditions on security, accountability, and civilian protection.

The United States House Appropriations Committee has approved a foreign assistance bill proposing to withhold 50 per cent of aid to Nigeria over concerns about insecurity and accountability. The measure is part of the Fiscal Year 2027 funding plan and requires the United States Department of State to certify Nigeria’s progress before full funds are released.
Under the proposal, Nigeria must demonstrate effective efforts to curb violence, protect civilians, and prosecute those responsible for abuses. The bill also mandates support for victims, including internally displaced persons, and requires the government to commit matching funds to US-backed programmes.
If passed into law, the policy would introduce stricter congressional oversight, including advance notification before funds are disbursed. While the bill still needs full approval by Congress and the president, it signals a shift toward tighter US scrutiny of aid to countries facing prolonged security challenges.
