Ukraine intelligence reports death of another Nigerian mercenary on Russian frontline

Ukrainian authorities have announced the death of Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, an Ondo State native who was allegedly killed in combat after being lured by Russian recruitment networks into signing a mercenary contract

The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine has reported the death of another Nigerian national, Ayebusiwa Olabode Victor, who was allegedly killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kharkiv region. Born in Ilutitun, Ondo State, Victor reportedly signed a mercenary contract in late February 2026, just a week after Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs explicitly warned citizens against illegal recruitment into foreign conflicts.

Ukrainian authorities alleged that Russian recruitment networks utilize social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to lure African nationals with false job promises. Upon arrival in Moscow, victims reportedly have their passports seized and are forced into military service.

Describing the deceptive recruitment cycle, the intelligence agency stated: “Their story is typical… deception, promises of ‘easy money,’ a week of training, deployment to the front, and a quick death.”
