Britain plans to make people granted asylum repay around £10,000 in accommodation and support costs once they start earning, as part of a new Immigration and Asylum Bill.
UK to make asylum seekers repay £10,000 accommodation cost
The UK Home Office announced on Tuesday, according to Gazette NGR, that migrants who can afford it will need to pay roughly £10,000 to be eligible for settlement, covering the cost of housing and financial support received. Asylum beneficiaries who leave the UK and later wish to return would also be required to pay the sum first.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the policy reflects the principle that “asylum support is a right, but it is also a responsibility,” adding that those who can contribute are expected to repay “the generosity of the British people.”
The Home Office noted that only 24 per cent of 16 to 64-year-olds granted asylum between 2015 and 2023 were employed within their first year in the UK.
