Uganda shuts Congo border as rare Ebola cases surge

Uganda has moved to shut its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo as a fast-growing outbreak of a rare Ebola strain spreads across the region, according to AP News. The decision follows confirmed cases in Uganda traced to contact with infected patients from Congo, where suspected infections are climbing sharply.

Health authorities say the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. Congo has reported over 100 confirmed cases and hundreds more suspected infections, with deaths also rising.

Uganda says only emergency crossings will now be allowed, with strict isolation measures in place for arrivals from Congo. The World Health Organization has advised against border closures, warning they may push people into unsafe unofficial routes.

Officials continue contact tracing and surveillance as fears grow of wider regional spread. The outbreak remains a major public health concern across East Africa.
