Senate leader proposes end to second-term politics, pushes for six-year single term

A fresh debate over Nigeria’s political structure is back on the table. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has unveiled plans to sponsor a bill seeking a single six-year tenure for presidents and governors, arguing that elected leaders should spend more time governing and less time worrying about re-election campaigns.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Bamidele said the proposal would be among the first bills he hopes to introduce in the 11th Senate after the 2027 general elections. According to him, the current two-term system often forces leaders to begin planning for a second term barely halfway into their first mandate.

As reported by The Punch, the Senate leader believes a single six-year term would allow officeholders to focus fully on delivering results from day one. The proposal is expected to reignite nationwide discussions on constitutional reforms, governance and electoral accountability. (Punch Newspapers)
