Nigeria’s Senate has approved a three-month extension for the implementation of the 2025 budget, moving the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026.
According to Leadership, lawmakers backed the move to allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) more time to complete ongoing projects and utilise funds already released for capital expenditure. Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno said delays in procurement processes, project execution and administrative bottlenecks had slowed implementation across key sectors.
Senators warned that ending the budget cycle now could leave critical projects abandoned and waste public resources. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Solomon Adeola noted that several obligations remain outstanding despite ongoing payments.
The extension is expected to help government agencies complete projects, settle pending payments and improve overall budget performance before the new deadline.
