Retired Nigerian Army Major General Haruna Garba Gololo was reportedly arrested in Abuja after criticising Senate President Godswill Akpabio over remarks linked to President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
A retired Major General of the Nigerian Army and prominent Northern elder, Haruna Garba Gololo, popularly known as Garus Gololo, has reportedly been arrested at Grand Square Supermarket in Abuja following remarks he made against Godswill Akpabio over comments linked to the 2027 presidential election. Gololo, who held several strategic positions during his military career before retiring with the rank of Major General, has in recent years become known for outspoken political commentary and strong views on national issues affecting Northern Nigeria and the country at large.
According to sources familiar with the development, the retired Army officer was allegedly picked up for questioning after a video surfaced online in which he launched a scathing attack on Akpabio over statements suggesting that Bola Ahmed Tinubu would return in 2027 “whether Northerners like it or not.” The remarks by the Senate President reportedly generated outrage among some Northern political stakeholders, with Gololo emerging as one of the strongest critics of Akpabio’s comments.
In the now-viral video obtained by SaharaReporters, Gololo accused Akpabio of disrespecting Northern Nigerians despite what he described as the region’s role in supporting the current administration. “Okay, good afternoon my fellow Nigerians, once again. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, we heard your message,” Gololo said in the video. “You say, oh, the Northern vote of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or they didn’t vote that is coming back. No problem. What is your vote, the last election? Do you win? You don’t win anything. Do you bring any vote from Akwa Ibom? You don’t bring any vote.”
