Reps set to vote on state police bill on Thursday

Nigeria’s long-running debate over state police is set for a major turning point this week.

The House of Representatives has announced plans to vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow the creation of state and local police forces across the country.

According to The Nation, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, said lawmakers have decided to prioritise the state police proposal because of growing security challenges nationwide.

Kalu revealed that members currently away on oversight duties have been directed to return to Abuja ahead of Thursday’s crucial vote.

The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Speaker and 14 other lawmakers, is seen as one of the most significant security-related constitutional reforms currently before the National Assembly.

If approved, the measure could reshape Nigeria’s policing structure and give states greater responsibility for tackling local security threats.
