The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a near-total collapse as Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Seyi Makinde of Oyo reportedly prepare to defect, following a mass exodus of nine other governors to the ruling APC over the past year.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is teetering on the edge of total disintegration following reports that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State are finalized plans to dump the party before April 2026. A credible source familiar with the internal crisis told DAILY POST that the long-standing leadership tussle within the main opposition platform has reached a breaking point, making the exit of the two influential leaders “inevitable.” According to the source, while Governor Mohammed is expected to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Makinde is reportedly concluding plans to move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). “All the PDP leaders are leaving. Bala Mohammed is already in APC, Makinde is on his way to ADC,” the source stated anonymously.
The looming exit of the Bauchi and Oyo governors follows an unprecedented wave of defections that has seen no fewer than nine PDP governors abandon the party since the 2023 general elections. The exodus began in April 2025 with Delta State’s Sheriff Oborevwori, followed by Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno and Enugu’s Peter Mbah. By late 2025, the party lost Douye Diri (Bayelsa) and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) to the APC, while Osun State’s Ademola Adeleke made a unique move to the Accord Party. The trend accelerated in early 2026 as Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa) all moved to the ruling party, citing an irreconcilable internal crisis.
In addition to the departures of Mohammed and Makinde, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has also indicated a strong interest in joining the APC. Sources suggest that Lawal will be officially received into the ruling party immediately following the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. This series of high-profile departures has left the PDP with a dwindling presence across the federation, fueling concerns about the future of multi-party democracy in Nigeria. With the party’s national convention scheduled for March 2026 mired in factional disputes, the “Landlords” of the opposition appear to be seeking more stable political platforms ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
