Our artistes’ shows are being cancelled across Africa over xenophobia, says South African minister

South Africa’s Justice Minister has admitted the country is suffering real economic consequences from xenophobia allegations, with entertainers losing bookings and businesses facing pushback across the continent.

South Africa is counting the cost of its xenophobia crisis — and it’s hurting the pockets of ordinary citizens.

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi revealed on Sunday that South African artistes are losing performance gigs across Africa, while businesses operating on the continent are also feeling the heat. One entertainer, she said, had every single continental booking cancelled, Vanguard reports.

“This is income lost by a South African,” Kubayi told SABC, while insisting government crackdowns targeted illegal immigrants — not African nationals legally in the country.

The fallout has even reached football. Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams lamented that African fans backed Mexico over South Africa at the 2026 World Cup.
