Kidnapped Kwara monarch Salman Aweda confirmed dead after abductors demanded ₦21m ransom, two motorcycles, petrol

A wave of sorrow has swept through Kwara State following the confirmation of the death of Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, the traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

According to SaharaReporters, the monarch died while in the custody of his abductors, who had reportedly demanded ₦21 million, two brand-new motorcycles and a jerrycan of petrol for his release. News of his death was conveyed through an emotional message from a member of a community committee set up to secure his freedom.

Residents, family members, religious leaders and community stakeholders had reportedly spent weeks negotiating and praying for the monarch’s safe return. However, hopes were dashed when reports emerged that he had died in captivity despite efforts to meet the kidnappers’ demands.

The development has plunged the Olayinka community into mourning, with Islamic funeral prayers planned in his honour even though his body has yet to be recovered. The tragic incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity and kidnappings across parts of Nigeria.
