The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) says public schools in Oyo State will remain closed until the government provides adequate security following the abduction of pupils and teachers.
Public schools in Oyo State will remain shut until the government demonstrates that classrooms are safe again, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has said, People Gazette reports.
The union suspended academic activities after more than 40 pupils and teachers were abducted in Oriire Local Government Area in May. According to NUT Secretary Olukayode Salami, the continued captivity of victims and the killing of two teachers have left educators traumatised and fearful.
Salami said schools could reopen once the government implements effective security measures, rescues those still in captivity and restores public confidence.
He called for stronger security patrols, intelligence gathering and joint operations involving security agencies, hunters and vigilante groups, especially in vulnerable communities.
The union stressed that schools must remain places of learning, not targets for criminal attacks.
