Nigerian airlines are ‘dead on arrival’ — Allen Onyema

Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema says Nigerian airlines are effectively “dead on arrival” due to soaring fuel costs, high taxes, and expensive loans that are threatening the industry’s survival

Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema has delivered a stark warning about the state of Nigeria’s aviation sector, declaring that local airlines are “dead on arrival” under the weight of crushing operating costs.

Speaking on Arise TV, Onyema said Nigerian carriers are battling a perfect storm of soaring aviation fuel prices, multiple taxes, and loan interest rates of up to 33 percent. He noted that fuel costs for some domestic flights have jumped from about N3 million to as much as N13 million, PM news reports.

The airline boss argued that while aviation is facing global pressures linked to geopolitical tensions, Nigerian operators are dealing with even harsher realities. According to him, no local airline is currently thriving, with many cutting flights simply to stay afloat.

Onyema also called for a review of aviation taxes and charges, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene before more airlines collapse.
