Armed members of the Lakurawa terrorist group openly visited Zugurma community in Niger State’s Borgu LGA in broad daylight, announcing social directives including mandatory marriage for girls above 15 and a fixed bride price of N1,500, as residents warn of rapid territorial expansion by the group.
They came in broad daylight, stayed for hours and left behind a community gripped by fear.
Armed members of the Lakurawa terrorist group visited Zugurma community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday, openly preaching their ideology and issuing directives that residents say signal a creeping imposition of authority. According to community sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, the terrorists announced that any girl above 15 must be married off and fixed the bride price — known as sadaki — at a shocking N1,500.
“They stayed in the community for hours preaching to people. During the meeting, they said any girl above 15 years must be married off. They also announced that bride price, known as sadaki, should be fixed at N1,500,” a source revealed.
The boldness of the visit is alarming. Weeks earlier, witnesses reported hundreds of motorcycles — carrying possibly over a thousand armed fighters — moving from Kebbi State into Borgu completely unchallenged. “They moved through the area without resistance,” one resident alleged.
Zugurma’s location makes the situation even more critical. It sits on the only major road linking Borgu to Mokwa — a strategic corridor connecting the entire region to the rest of Nigeria. “What is happening here should concern everyone,” a source warned.
Residents are furious at authorities they accuse of chronic inaction despite repeated warnings. “If nothing is done, Borgu could become completely cut off,” another source said.
Lakurawa isn’t hiding anymore. And that may be the most terrifying part.
