The Nigeria Union of Teachers has directed public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike from June 1, 2026, over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and students.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely beginning from Monday, June 1, 2026, in protest against the continued detention of abducted teachers and learners by kidnappers. The directive was issued by the national leadership of the union and communicated to members across the state in a statement dated May 31, 2026, signed by the Oyo State Secretary of the union, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode.
The notice was addressed to elected state officers, members of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) serving as branch trustees, headteachers, principals of public primary and secondary schools, as well as classroom teachers across the state. According to the union, the decision to embark on an indefinite withdrawal of services was taken to compel relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward the rescue and safe release of the abducted teachers and students who remain in captivity.
The union expressed concern over the prolonged detention of its members and learners, noting that there was no clear indication of when they would regain their freedom. It maintained that the safety and security of teachers and students must remain a priority, stressing that the industrial action would continue until concrete steps were taken to secure the release of those still being held by their abductors.
