Former Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola has said he never received security votes during his eight years in office, challenging widespread assumptions about how the controversial funds are handled.
Speaking at The Platform’s June 12 Democracy Day event, Fashola said the notion that governors personally collect security votes is “laughable,” insisting no such money ever came directly to him while he governed Lagos.
According to a report by Tribune Online, the former minister explained that all state funds during his administration were domiciled within the Lagos State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, rather than being paid into his personal control.
Fashola made the remarks while responding to questions on the effectiveness of security votes amid Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, during a panel discussion that also featured former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
