The Oyo State Police Command has debunked reports that one of the abducted Oriire schoolchildren died in captivity, insisting the claim is false and unsupported by any security agency.
The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that one of the schoolchildren abducted from Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area died while in captivity, describing the claim as false and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
According to TheCable, the command, in a statement issued on Friday, said neither the police nor any security agency involved in the rescue efforts had confirmed such a development. “The report is false, misleading, mischievous, and without any factual basis whatsoever,” the statement reads.
The police further accused the authors of the report of deliberately spreading unverified information to manipulate public opinion and heighten fear among residents. “It is particularly disturbing that the authors of the report deliberately employed emotional narratives, speculative claims, and unverified accounts in a calculated attempt to manipulate public opinion and generate anxiety among residents,” the statement added.
The command stressed that rescue operations for the abducted pupils are ongoing and being handled with professionalism and confidentiality. It warned that the circulation of false information could undermine security efforts and worsen the trauma faced by affected families, while urging bloggers, influencers and media organisations to verify security-related reports before publication.
