NIger: Police outpost razed, 32 killed in deadly bandit raid on Tunga-Makeri, Konsoko

Suspected bandits have reportedly killed 32 farmers and razed several buildings, including a police outpost, during a coordinated dawn raid on three communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

In a devastating wave of violence on Saturday, February 14, 2026, suspected bandits launched a series of coordinated attacks on the Tugan-Makeri, Konsoko, and Pissa communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving at least 32 people dead. The assault reportedly began around 3:00 a.m. in Tunga-Makeri, where six residents were killed, before the gunmen—estimated to number over 200—moved on to Konsoko and Pissa at approximately 6:00 a.m. Residents described a scene of chaos as the attackers shot sporadically for several hours, setting fire to numerous homes and a local police outpost while residents fled into the surrounding bushes for safety.

According to local witnesses, the Saturday morning raid lasted until approximately 10:00 a.m., with the attackers operating with near impunity despite the proximity of the Nigerian Air Force Base in New Bussa. Hassan Abdullahi, a resident who escaped the carnage, noted that 26 people were confirmed dead in the second leg of the attack alone. “The bandits stormed our town around 3am, riding so many motorcycles while shooting sporadically, beheading six people and killing others. They set shops on fire and forced the whole village to flee,” recounted Auwal Ibrahim, another survivor from Tunga-Makeri. While the full casualty count from Pissa is still being verified, the scale of destruction across the three villages has left the agrarian region in deep mourning.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that security forces had been notified of the 3:00 a.m. invasion of Tunga-Makeri. “Suspected bandits invaded Tunga-Makeri village, six persons lost their lives, some houses were also set ablaze and a yet-to-be ascertained number of persons were abducted,” Abiodun confirmed. He added that the command is currently working to establish the full extent of the loss in Konsoko and Pissa, where the burning of the police outpost has further hampered immediate local response. Security monitoring in the area has since been intensified to prevent further incursions and track the abductees.
