The New Zealand government has unveiled a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa and expanded its existing Post Study Work Visa program to help international graduates bridge the gap into local employment.
International students mapping out their post-graduation plans just got a brand-new safety net down under. According to Tribune, the Kiwi government has formally announced a major shake-up to its post-study immigration framework. Starting November 16, 2026, a new six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa will step into the spotlight, giving international graduates who miss out on the traditional, longer-term Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) a dedicated window of open work rights to hunt for a job and legally transition into local industries.
The freshly minted visa category serves as a temporary stepping stone into the Kiwi workforce, specifically aiming to feed talent into pipelines like the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Bear in mind, immigration authorities are calling this a strict, one-and-done opportunity. The visa cannot be extended, is granted only once per lifetime, and blocks holders from starting a business or sponsoring family members. On the flip side, New Zealand is also sweetening the pot by expanding its premium Post Study Work Visa program; under the updated criteria, international students who lock down a Level 7 graduate diploma can score up to a one-year work visa, provided they already hold an undergraduate bachelor’s degree from either a domestic or overseas institution.
