NDPC investigates Temu for possible data protection violation

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has launched an investigation into Temu over alleged breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act involving millions of Nigerian users.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has opened an investigation into the data processing activities of e-commerce platform Temu over alleged violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. In a statement, NDPC’s head of legal enforcement, Babatunde Bamigboye, said, “The NDPC National Commissioner/CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, has ordered an immediate investigation of the data processing activities of Temu,” citing concerns about online surveillance, data minimisation, transparency and cross-border data transfers, noting the platform processes data of 12.7 million Nigerians.
