Heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Lagos, submerging homes and roads, stranding commuters, and destroying goods worth millions of Naira in warehouses and shops.
Lagos — It was Lagos versus the rain yesterday, and the rain won.
Residents didn’t hold back their frustration as recurring flooding submerged major roads, stranded motorists, disrupted businesses and left homes underwater across the metropolis, with many raining curses on the Lagos State Government over what has become an all-too-familiar nightmare.
The downpour, which started as early as 3am in some areas and lasted the entire day, turned major roads into rivers. Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Maryland, Mushin, Ogudu, Lekki, Oshodi, Agege, Alimosho, Obalende, Apapa, Ago Palace Way and Amuwo Odofin — the story was the same everywhere: gridlock, stranded cars, and residents wading through floodwater just to get home.
For many, it wasn’t just an inconvenience — it was devastating. Homes were swallowed by the flood, leaving several families homeless. Warehouses caved under the pressure of surging waters, and businessmen counted losses running into millions of Naira as goods stocked in shops and warehouses were destroyed.
The Sun reported that commercial transport operators suspended services entirely as floodwaters rose, forcing many commuters to trek long distances just to get to their destinations. Some parked vehicles didn’t stand a chance either, disappearing beneath the floodwaters in several locations.
Even motorists who dared to brave the roads found it nearly impossible to navigate, with entire neighbourhoods rendered impassable. Most people simply stayed indoors, watching helplessly as the city ground to a halt.
By the end of the day, it was clear: this wasn’t just rain — it was a full-blown crisis, and one many residents feel the Lagos State Government has failed to get ahead of, despite it happening year after year.
